Read it carefully before signing — non-competes are enforceable in some states (notably not California) and can lock you out of your industry for 6-24 months after you leave. Three things to check: (1) is it reasonable in scope, geography, and duration? (2) does your state allow them at all? (3) is there a 'garden leave' clause (paid time off in exchange)? If it feels overbroad, ask HR to narrow it — they often will, especially if you're being hired (not just retained).
